Note: Birth date from tombstone, Santa Fe Cemetery, Hildreth, FL In the 1860 Census for Izard Co., AR, John Dale is listed as boarding with the Monroe Elliott family. The 1870 Census for Izard Co., AR., lists the family as Dale, John D., 37, farmer, value of real estate $800, value of personal estate $1000 b. TN; Dale, Lucy, 27, b. TN; Hope, William, 9; Dale, Martha, 6; Dale, Eliza, 2; Dale, Daniel, 7 months. All children are listed as born in AR. In an article about the Bickles Cove of Izard Co., later Stone Co., AR, it is mentioned that John D. Dale was a pioneer settler of Bickles Cove and its first postmaster. "Heritage of Stone, Vol. 4, No. 1, Spring 1980, A History of Bickles Cove." The 1880 Census for Stone Co., AR lists the family in Blue Mountain Township. John D. Dale, 46; Lucy, 36; Hope, Wm. 18; Dale, Martha, 15; Elizabeth, 12; Leandra, 8; John W., 6; Margarett, 1. John D. and Lucy were born in TN and all the children were born in AR. The 1900 Census for Suwanee Co., FL shows the family living in Branford, consisting of John D., 66; Lucy, 56; Isabel, 21, and Ida Dale, 19, and grandson Charles Hope, 12. John D. lists his occupation as farmer. John D. Dale served in the Confederate Army as a private in Company G of the New 8th Arkansas Infantry. He mustered in 1 Sep 1861 in Pocahontas, AR at age 28. He was appointed a teamster. The muster card for Apr - May 1862 appears to say "Absent sick - Bounty due." ($50 bounty for reenlistment.) Discharged 2 Jul 1862. Freda Massey of the Stone Cty. Historical Society sent this article which appeared in "The Expositor", published on 14 Jul 1883: " For Sale: Farm in Bickles Cove, 6 miles from Mountain View, 200 acres in tract, 80 acres in cultivation. Dwelling of 3 rooms, smoke house, stationary thresher and cotton gin. Good well in yard and abundant stock water convenient. Small orchard. Land will produce 40 to 60 bu. of corn or 1000 to 1500 pounds of seed cotton per acre. Society good, only 300 yards to nearest church and school house. Price $1,800. Apply to John D. Dale, on the premises, or to Oyler, Hixon & McRaven, Real Estate Agents." Belle Dale Reynold's descendants remember being told that the John D. Dale family was operating a broom factory in Florida. An obituary in the Jacksonville Times Union reads, "Branford, Feb. 1. John D. Dale died at his home here Monday. He was sick only a few days with grip. Mr. Dale was about seventy years old, and came here from Tennessee eight years ago. He leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters." This is the only known photo of John D.
