Note:   This is believed to be a photo of James Monroe Elliott taken between 1861 and 1866. http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3259/jamesmonroeelliottca186118666x.jpg According to a divorce petition secured by Pauline Mitchell Pierce, Elizabeth Ellet stated she married James Monroe Ellet in Jackson Co., AL in March 1837, that he left her in April 1837, and that she was delivered of a male child in December 1837. Chancery Court Record, Madison Co., AL, Book M, pages 304 - 306. Excerpts from Notes by Maxine Elliott Gilliam: Monroe Elliott was 45 years old and had a wife and eleven or twelve children when he was more or less forced to volunteer in the Civil War. His family's livelihood depended on what they could raise on their farm. There were many responsible family men around his age in the northern and northwestern counties of Arkansas who simply did not want a war. They just wanted to be left alone to raise their families and survive the best they could. They formed the Arkansas Peace Society of 1861. This was a secret organization or supposedly so. They organized as sort of a home guard to defend their families and their property in case they were attacked. The state of Arkansas was being run by a Confederate government and they accused its estimated 1700 members of treason. Some were arrested and some were tried and acquitted. Others volunteered to serve the Confederacy and some the north. Monroe volunteered to serve the Confederacy as most of the men did. ELLIOTT, JAMES M.: Co. D, Enl. on 8/26/63 in Granville Co., NC.
