Note: From the recollections of Maxine Gilliam, quoted by Genia Haslar: James was born in Izard Co., AR. All the family called him Jeames. He moved 35 members of his family to Pawnee, Bee County, TX in 1912. That area of Texas was very sparsely settled at that time. They bought land covered with mesquite brush and had to clear the land before they could farm it. Until they dug water wells they hauled their water in barrels from Kenedy, 20 miles away.
