a. Note:   rammed initials. My mother said the cufflinks had been given to her when she was a child by one of her great-grandmothers, a genteel lady who spoke French as well as she spoke English. That lady was Sarah Barkman Segraves. Sarah had said the cufflinks had belonged to her grandfather. Arkansas Post, a military base at the confluence of the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers, also known as Ft. Desha, was founded by the French in 1686, and French soldiers were stationed there until the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Personnel stationed at the fort in 1757 included a Second Ensign Bachemin. The area around the post was settled by French people very early. Sarah's father was born on the Barkman family homestead which was 5 miles from Arkansas Post.
