a. Note:   ke of Somerset. Born the son of John de Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset and Lady Margaret de Holand. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Somerset in Nov 1418. He fought in Henry V's 1419 campaigns in France and accompanied the king's younger brother, Thomas of Lancaster, to Anjou where Thomas was killed at Bagu, and Somerset was captured. He was ransomed Aft a 17 year incarceration. He produced at least three illegitimate children, one Bef and two Aft his marriage to Margaret Beauchamp, which took place between 1439 and 1442. With his wife he had one surviving daughter, Lady Margaret Beaufort, whose son would become Henry VII. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter Abt 1440. He was created 1st Earl of Kendal in and 1st Duke of Somerset in Aug 1443. He died Abt age forty, possibly as a result of suicide. He was buried at Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England. (bio by: Iola)}
