Samuel was sheriff and a deputy U.S. Marshall in Hancock Co. Illinois. On 27 June 1844 he put Joseph
and Hiram Smith in the Carthage Jail for their own protection from the locals who wanted to lynch them. Joseph was in jail and heard a mob coming and thought it was his followers and waved through the jail window bars and was shot and killed.
