Notes
a. Note:   [boggs.FTW] John D, Boggs' obituary in the CHRISTIAN INDEX states that he was born in the state of New Jersey and that his father was a Presbyterian minister who received a call from the First Presbyterian church in Savannah, GA. So, John D. Boggs moved to GA when he was 16 years old. Sources indicate that his father was Rev. John Boggs who moved from church to church quite often. Although his father moved quite often, John D. appears to have spent most of his life in Wilkes and Oglethorpe counties until moving to Atlanta. John D. Boggs apparently met and married Mrs. Jane F. Moncrief while his father was a pastor in Washington, GA since he and Jane married in Washington Presbyterian Church in Wilkes Co., Ga. John D's obituary also states that John joined the Presbyterian church before he was 20 years old, but became dissatisfied and changed to the Baptist church. Records of Washington Presbyterian Church (Wilkes Co., Ga) indicate that John D. was dismissed from membership on August 20, 1831, possibly transferring to the Methodist church. Records of the Lexington Circuit and Oglethorpe Mission of the Methodist church show that John D. Boggs was "examined and passed" on 7/24/1858. John D. even became a licensed preacher, traveling for 10 years throughout the state of GA as a colporter for the American Tract Society. The City Directory of Atlanta and West End (1876) shows John D. Boggs living at 10 Simpson St. His son, Wesley A. Boggs was living at 7 Venable St., also in Atlanta. John D. remained a Baptist until his death. It is reported that John D. Boggs is buried in an unmarked pauper's grave in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, GA.
