Notes
a. Note:   [boggs.FTW] Sources state that Rev. John Boggs was a native of Savannah, GA, but was educated in the north. He returned to Savannah from the Presbytery of New Brunswick, NJ when he received a call to pastor the First Presbyterian Church (of the Georgia Presbytery) there on 11/30/1828. His relationship with this congregation lasted only about one year, being dissolved on 12/1/1829. He was dismissed to the Presbytery of Hopewell in NE GA where he was received in 1830. He remained there until 1833 at which time he was dismissed to the South Carolina Presbytery. Howes' HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SOUTH CAROLINA lists the progression of pastoral positions (as supplied by Rev. James H. Saye's HISTORY OF FAIRFOREST CHURCH) as follows: (1) First Presbyterian Church, Savannah, GA, (2) Washington, GA, (3) Cherokee Corner, GA, (4) Greenville District, SC, (5) Spartanburg, C.H. (Nazareth church ca 1833-1837), (6) Fairforest, SC (Union District - ca 1837-1838), (7)Louisiana (in 1838 for some years), (8) Virginia, (9) Abbeville District, SC after which he "entered upon his reward". Rev. Saye also gives us this picture of the physical and behavioral characteristics of Rev. John BOGGS: He was "small and emaciated" and his face "cadaverous with piercing, black eyes". He "preached often with great effect". He was "solemn and earnest with readiness in word and doctrine." He lived a roving life.
