Campbell; NOTE: Company Muster-in Roll dtd Dallas TX 15 Feb 1862 shows John Jackson, age 30, a 2nd Bugler in Capt. J. S. W. Merchant's Co., Col. Middleton T. Johnson's Regiment Volunteers (also known as Johnson's Mounted Volunteers, 1st Regiment, Johnson's Brigade; and subsequently Co H, 14th TX Cavalry); joined for duty and enrolled 23 Dec 1861 at Denton Co TX by J. S. W. Merchant for a period of 12 mos; valuation of horse $120, valuation of equipments $25. "J. Jackson" made his mark on a receipt roll for "Commutation of Rations" from Dec 23 to Feb 19 (year not stated, but with remark 24 Dec 1863). The 14th TX Cavalry was organized and mustered into service 15 Feb 1862 and reorganized 8 May 1862. It was also known as Johnson's Regiment Texas Cavalry and as the 1st Regiment Johnson's Brigade Texas Mounted Volunteers. [Researched by Tad D. Campbell, Gilroy CA].
