OBITUARY: Benton County Record & Democrat, Vol. 20, No. 47, Thurs., March 8, 1934, p 1, Bentonville Public Library, Microfilm No. 93399; NOTE: DEATH OF HIWASSE PIONEER Alex Oakes, son of a pioneer family died at his home in Hiwasse on Friday, March 2nd at the age of nearly 87 years. For more than 80 years, he had lived in Benton County. Funeral services were held at the Dug Hill M. E. Church, Sunday afternoon, the Rev. O. M. Campbell conducting the same, assisted by the Gravette American Legion Post. Burial took place in the cemetery adjoining. Pallbearers were Virgil Bakes, H. M. Horton, P. C. Goforth, V. L. Hendrickson, Frank Reynolds, and S. K. McMillan. Mr. Oakes joined the church in 1870 and has since been identified with it. Mr. Oakes was born in Montgomery County, Tenn., April 6, 1847. He was the son of Wm. and Malinda Oakes who moved to Benton County with their family in 1852. Mr. Oakes took up a tract of land in the Sugar Creek valley north of Bentonville, now known as the Alex Wright farm. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Oakes joined the Union Army and was assigned to the First Arkansas Cavalry of which one year was spent in carrying the U. S. mail from Springfield to Fayetteville, over the old "Wire Road." Following the war in 1868 he married Mrs. Rebecca Jackson. Four of the five children born to them survive him: Mrs. Lon Williams, Bentonville; Theodore Oakes, Gravette; G. W. Oakes, Sulphur Springs, and Mrs. S. B. Tiner of Wichita, Kansas. Lewis Oakes of Hiwasse is a son of his second marriage. John Jackson, living north of Bentonville is a step son. The death of Mr. Oakes takes away one of the very few remaining veterans who wore either the blue or the gray. Following the death of his first wife, he later married Mrs. Amanda Boyd, who passed away about a year ago. [Researched by Tad D. Campbell, Gilroy CA].
