He acquired his early education in the district schools of Livingston and Shiawassee counties. 2 yrs after the family came to Shiawassee Co, when Ira was 12, he "went for himself" working on a farm by the month until 1863. He then served in the 10th MI Cavalry for 2 1/2 yrs. He was wounded several times. At Knoxville TN he was "shot in the arm by an ounce ball, tearing the muscles of the arm loose, the ball entering the side and really making four distinct wounds." At Jonesville he was shot in the other arm, making a slight wound. At Flat Rock he received a saber cut on his head. He was sent home from the hospital, "after serving the country in its hour of need." Once back home, he bought 40 acres of wild land and cut the first trees in order to make room for a house. He added 140 acres to the farm and then deeded the land to his children, with the exception of 80 acres which he retained for himself. Ira married 8 Oct 1863 to Melinda Young who was born 28 Aug 1847, and who was the dau of Thomas R. Young. In politics Ira Angus was is a Republican, though in no sense an office seeker.
