a. Note:   Born in Manchester, NH, in 1921. Son of David and Judith Morris Palmer, the family moved to Hanover, MA while the children were young. Herbert learned show making when he was young. He worked on a canal and was paid in land. When he came to the Ohio Valley he bought 140 acres of land for $1000, located on the Ohio River, 3 miles north of Ravenswood in Jackson County (February 9. 1957). The original tract of land was part of the George Washington Grant of 2,448 acres dated December 15, 1772 in Botetourt, VA. It was known as "The Ravenswood Tract" (See Making of a State, by Edgar Sims Plot 7). He married Susan Nesselroad and had 12 children; they are buried in the Palmer cemetery on the Palmer Farm in Jackson County. She preceeded him in death and he married a second timeto a Mrs. Hysel; they ultimately separated and Herbert lived the remainder of his life on the Palmer farm with his youngest son (to whom the property was deeded) Per Michelle Palmer
