a. Note:   He was a Brick Mason (apprenticeship in Covington, KY) and moved to Linn Co., IA in 1851 where he enlisted in the 9th Iowa Infantry, Company K and was wounded at Pea Ridge, Arkansas where his regiment turned the tide for victory for the Union. He served as a lieutenant in that battle. He was mustered out of the army as a 2nd Lieutenant at Chattanooga, TN (Oct 26, 1865) After Pea Ridge, he worked at his trade of builder in Hannibal, MO (about 1865). He lived in Hannibal until 1886. On August 10, 1886, he moved to Bruneau, ID According to records obtained from the National Archives he was about 5' 9?? tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. He received a pension of $12/mo. for his part in the Civil War beginning in 1902.
