Note:   JAMES LEACHMAN, an early settler of Putnam County And Resident of Marion Township, was born in Mason County Kentucky , April 7,1821 , son of William Leachman and Mary Reeves, The former a native of Virginia , and the later of Kentucky. His father removed to Kentucky at the age of nine years, where he married and lived until 1830, when he removed to this county. Locating in Marion Township, where he lived until his decease, which occured in August 1858. He was a kindhearted man and an oblinging neighbor. During the spring of one year he attended 73 log rollings. He was married twice, and was the father of ten children, of whom five are still living--JAMES, JOHN, MARY J, GEORGE AND WILLIAM H. He served the county as commisioner, and held other minor offices. He was a man of progressive ideas, and was well informed on the general topics of the day. James Leachman has been reared to manhood in this county, and has lived here ever since with the exception of two years spent in California during the gold excitement. He recieved a rudimentary education in the early schools of his time, and has been a life long farmer. He assisted in building the first two school houses in Marion Township, also the first two churches in the same township. He has seen much of pioneer life, having settled here when the county was one vast wilderness. December 3, 1843 he was married to Miss Ellen Mattews, daughter of Anderson B Matthews, and early settler of this county. He was married a second time February 21,1854, to Miss Mary E Shoptaugh, born in Putnam County November 25, 1829,and daughter of Jacob and Mary (Griffin) Shoptaugh, natives of Maryland ,who settled in this county in 1828, where they lived until there decease. To Mr. and Mrs. Leachman have been born twelve children , ten of whom are living-MARTHA ..wife of Willia N Mark; HARRIET A , wife of Walter Sellers; Rosa B; Luella; John Q.A.a teacher ; Artie S; Alice M; Jerome B ; and Clara E . Mr. Leachman settled upon his present farm section 18, Marion Township, where he owns 200 acres of good land. Politically he is a Democrat. JAMES LEACHMAN, age 31, farmer, born Ky. SOURCE: History of Putnam County, Ind.1887 SOURCE: Greencastle Star-Press Greencastle, Ind January 28, 1899 STRICKEN WITH PARALYSIS On Wednesday last Mr. James Leachman, of Marion township, was stricken with paralysis, and at this writing he still continues unconscious, and the fear is that the attack will prove fatal. LATER-Mr. Leachman died about two hours after he was stricken. Deceased was in the 79th year of his age, and was a native of Kentucky. He had long been a resident of this county; was a leading citizen, honest and conscientions in his dealings, and had many friends, who together with his relatives, sincerely mourn his sudden demise. Mr. Leachmam was a "forty-niner" he broke a team of oxen and went overland to California, when the gold excitement first broke out. He was accompanied by his brother, who died of cholera while making the trip. Mr Leachman's experiences in these early days were full of hardship, and his recital of them was always of interest to his hearers. He removed with his father to Putnam county, Ind. when nine years of age. James Leachman was reared to manhood on a farm, where he has lived ever since, with the exception of two years spent in California during the gold excitement. He received a rudimentary education in the school days of his time; he assisted in building the first who churches in Marion Township, this county and also the first school house. On Dec 3, 1843 he was married to Miss Ellen Mathews, daughter of Anderson B. Mathews, an early settler of this county, he was married a second time to Mary E. Shoptaugh, who,with nine children still survive and mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father and husband. He was of a kind and forgiving dispostion, ever ready to help needy and afflicted. He was a perfect father-what higher tribute can be said. But closed are his eves; the light never more shall cause them to open. Life's struggles are o'er. Death, the grim monster, defying all art, has blanched his cheeks and chilled his warm heart.
