SOURCE: Grand Rapids Newspaper February, 1971 C LEACHMAN, 67, Western Union Ex-Manager, dies Charles Leachman, 67, of 2034 Woodcliff Ave, S.E.retired manager of the Western Union Telegraph Co. office here, died Wednesday evening in Blodgett Memorial Hospital following a heart attack Sunday. Born in Greencastle, Ind., he attended school there.He served Western Union 46 years, including his last 6 years as manager here, prior to retirement in 1967. Before coming to Grand Rapids he was manager of the company's Muskegon office 21 years. His other posts in the state included South Haven, Battle Creek and Holland. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Muskegon,The Grand Rapids Rotary Club and the First United Methodist Church here. Surviving are his wife, Isabell; a son, Charles R. Jr. of Fenton; three daughters, Mrs. MaryLou Winstrand and Mrs. Richard Jones of Livonia and Miss Christine Ann Leachman at home; four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Bucklin of LaHabra, Calif, Mrs. George Johnson of New Hampton, Iowa, Mrs. Dewey Palmberg of Velva, N.D. and Mrs. Grace Pfau of Minnewaukan, N.D., and 10 grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with Rev. Carl L. Hausermann, associate pastor, thre, and Rev. John L. Miles, dean of Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The Body is at the Jonkhoff's Lake Drive Chapel. SOURCE: Aunt Gladys Leachman Johnson According to Aunt Gladys, Charles was born in a log house near the John D. Hart homestead in Putnam Co., Ind. Charles was about 4 years old when they moved into John D. Hart's home. Aunt gladys also recalled that Charles picked up a stone and threw it at a chicken, killing the chicken, she said they had chicken for dinner. In 1913 they moved to Brazil, Ind. His uncle Ollie Purcell got Charles a job carrying papers and when he got older he delivered telegrams at the Western Union Office. Western Union then sent him to Vincenese, Ind. for 8-10 months of training, later sent him to Michigan, his first assignment was Charlevoix Charles Ray LEACHMAN was married to Pearl Josephine DURANCE on 24 JUN 1924 in Charlevoix, Mich. He was divorced from Pearl Josephine DURANCE. Pearl Josephine DURANCE was born on 9 AUG 1902 in Charlevoix, Mi.. She died on 3 SEP 1986 in Garden City, Mi.. She was buried in Brookside Cem, Charlevoix, Mi.. Charles Ray LEACHMAN and Pearl Josephine DURANCE
