Notes
a. Note:   An old letter (dated 1947 ?1837) is quoted about the triplets of Alexander Gorham and his wife from a Loute Squires Thompson of Lexington, KY to a Miss Mary GORHAM of Paris, KY: "Did Mrs. HOWELL write you that Alexander and his wife were parents of triplets[ ie. Beersheba, Mary and Margaret ]? Two were black headed and one fair. The black headed girls do not like the fair-haired girl. The Gorhams are black headed and the Taylors (?TYLERS) were red-headed. Georgia Gorham Whitehouse is fair, but of course she 'took after' her mother." This is possibly a confusion between Alexanders. Did a later Alexender GORHAM in the 1940s have triplets too? Another story from a great neice of Alexander's(Elick) lived in KY. HIs wife had triplets. "The story goes... He walked up and down the porch when one of the atttendants came out and told him, 'You have a fine daughter,' he answered, 'very well, madam' and continued to walk. She came out again and said, 'Mr. GORHAM, you have another fine daughter,' and again he answered, 'very well, madam' and continued walking and again she came and said, ' Mr. GORHAM, you have another fine daughter,' he stopped, threw up his hands and exclaimed, 'O, Lord have mercy on me and my children.'" [This kindness of Michele Thomas of St. Peters, MO. Alexander GORHAM and his spouse, Sarah TYLER GORHAM, settled in Marion Twp., Putnam County, on October 3, 1829. He had previously entered land in the county in 1824, and purchased 240 acres for a homestead in 1828. It appears that Alexander also owned property in Hendricks Co, IN contiguous with a tract of Thornton F. GORHAM's. [ Thornton GORHAM of Hendricks Co, Brown Twp. p. 161 in 1850, was age 55, born in KY. He lived with Mariah GORHAM, AGE 30, b. KY, in HH # 1131, close to James STOBAUGH. ] The GORHAM family originally came from Ireland and settled in Virginia(?). He had some means when he came, so the family did not feel the hardship which many early settlers did. The land he purchased had an orchard with peach trees and apple trees, both of which bore fruit, they year he arrived. When he traveled from Kentucky with his wife and eleven children, he had a six horse team and one five horse team. He also had two saddle horses. He and Sally rode the two horses. The six-horse team belonged to his son, William. William returned with his team of horses and wagon to live out his life in Kentucky. At Alexander's death, a suit was filed by Joseph SIDDENS to have the settlement continued because three heirs were out of state, and the notice needed to be published three consequtive weeks in the "Wabash Courier," pub. in Terre Haute, IN. Who IS Joseph SIDDENS? Alexander's will was probated in 1837 in Putnam Co. IN. He names: dau. Susannah GORHAM, Polly SAUNDERS, Barsheba REEVES, son, George, Alexander, Thomas ?, William; dau. Sally GORHAM, Ruth BARLOW, grandsons: Alexander STOBAUGH, Jackson STOBAUGH, granddaughter Sarah Margaret STOBAUGH (if she stays in my family) when she comes of age 18; Granddaughter, Martha BARLOW, my s-i-l Timothy; dau, "Lina" PURSELL COFFMAN, my grandchildren, the children of Thomas PURCELL, have previously be given land.
