a. Note:   Obit Of William Toliver Browning William T. Browning was a man of God. In his death the Christian forces of the community suffered a severe loss. Born in Pendleton County, KY, Oct 22, 1830, he closed a long life of Christian service at his home Northwest of Raytown, MO, July 15, 1914. When he was 22 years old, Dec 22, 1852, he was married to a splended Christian young lady named Eliza J. Miller. To them were born ten children, eight sons and two daughters. All of these lived to maturity and nine of them were present at their father's bedside during his last illness. They are: (Not in order of birth) 1. C.A. Browning, Greenwood MO; 2. H.O. Browning, Kingsville, MO; 3. Talitha F. Browning, Blue Springs MO; 4. Joe Browning, Raytown; 5. Asa K. Browning, Independence, MO; 6. Thornton Browning, Lee's Summit, MO; 7. Charlie Browning, Blue Springs, MO; 8. Cora Browning, Raytown, MO. (For some reason Elijah H. Browning was omitted) Moved his family into the shadow of the Devil's Ridge by oxcart, from Covington, KY in 1874. They settled in a home near Lee's Summit where their ninth child was born a few weeks later. Report of Adjutant General of the State of KY, Civil War, Vol I, Confederate shows W.T. Browning, 4th Sergeant, enlisted Oct 1 1862 at Mt Sterling KY on the roll of Company I, Fifth Regiment Infantry. Promoted from 1st Corporal in 1864; wounded at Jonesboro GA Aug 31, 1864. Alpha Marie Browning's notes: Two brothers from England before the American Revolution. (Capt. John Browning on the "Abigail") One had 6 sons who all fought with Washington in Revolutionary War, except the oldest who was too old. He worked on George Washington's estate at Mt. Vernon. He moved to MO in 1874 to a farm between Blue Springs and Lee's Summit. Fought in 26 civil war battles and 70 or 80 smaller engagements. Read bible through 17 times while a soldier in the civil war. Rev. George Shanklin conducted funeral services assisted by Rev. H.K. Pendleton, pastor of Christian Church at Independence MO. He was a member of the Christian Church at Blue Springs MO. Browning was born in Pendleton County, KY in 1830, and died in Jackson County near Raytown in 1914. During the Civil War he served as a private soldier in Company I, 5th Kentucky Infantry, Confederate Army, and took part in 26 hard fought battles and over 70 skirmishes during his term of service. He was married in Kentucky to Eliza J. Miller who was born in 1836 and died in 1908. He came to Jackson County in March, 1874, and operated a farm in Prairie township, near Lees Summit, for 20 years. He then sold his farm and purchased another place near Raytown where he died. The children born to William T. and Eliza J. Browning are as follows: C.A. Browning, Greenwood, MO; H.O. Browning, Kingsville, MO; Mrs. Talitha F. Thompson, Blue Springs, MO; E.H. Browning, Rushville, MO; Joseph Browning, Raytown, MO; Asa K., of this sketch; Thornton, Lee's Summit, MO; Charles, Blue Springs, MO; Cora Browning, Raytown MO; Early Browning died in September 1897 at the age of 31 years. For several years after locating here, W.T. Browning was engaged in the wholesale tobacco business. He purchased tobacco in quantitiesat Lees Summit and shipped it in car lots to Louisville and Cincinnati. His brother, O.N. Browning, of Lees Summit was at one time the largest loose leaf tobacco dealer in the United States. At the time of Mrs. Browning's death in 1908, Mr. and Mrs. Browning had 29 grand children and five great grand children. This estimable couple had lived together for 56 years and had lived to see all of their children grow to maturity. Nine of these children are living at the present time. William T. Browning took an unusually active part in church and religious work and lived according to his creed. He was kind and obliging and strictly honest in all of his business dealings and enjoyed the respect and esteen of all who knew him. His home was a very hospitable one and his door was always open, a warm welcome being always given to both friend and stranger.
