Note: Rueben H Flinn Boone County Indianna, Is a favorite home of many veterans of the civil was and among them is Rueben H Flinn, our subject, a solider who deserves more than a passing space in our record. His grandfather William Flynn was one of the pioneers of Kentucky. He decended from an Old Colonial American Family of Irish Ancestry. He Became a Substancial Farmer and was the Father of Three children who are remembered-- Valentine, John And William . He lived to be more than eighty years of age . Valentine , Father of Our Subject was a farmner of Nicholas County Ky and married Susan Sacre. To them ten children were born in the following order John R, Alfred, Willliam W, Marion F, George W , Rueben H , Johanna C, Mary J, Rowena E, Thomas D . About 1866 Mr. Flinn moved to Indianna and located in Clinton County , and came to Boone County in 1855 , and here passed the remainder of his days. Both He and wife were members of the Missonary Baptist Church. He voted with the democrats until 1856 when he becam one of the original Republicans. Mr. Flinn was a typical American pioneer and straight forward with his dealings . He was loyal to the Union and had four sons in the Civil War. Alfred in the 148 regt Indianna Vol Infantry, William W in Comp D 72 regt Ind. Vol Infatry, George W Comp d 72 reg Ind Vol belonging to Wilderds Brigade and Rueben H . Rueben H Flynn was born 8-13-1840 in Franklin County Ky , He recieved the pioneer education of his day, and was 13 when his father came to Indianna . He followed the pursuit of Agriculture, at the breaking of the was , filled with patriotism to serve his counrty he enlisted 5-8-1861 in Washington Township , Boone County Indianna , in Company H 15 regt. Indianna Vol Infantry and served three years, he veternatized in January 1864 and was transferred to Comp C 17 regt and served his country until the close of the war . He mustered out in Macon Ga and was honorably discharged having served this country as a solider for four years and three months .He was in the battle of Stone River, and Missonary Ridge And May skirmishes . In the 77 reg. he mounted and in the famous Wilson Raid. He was in a severe skirmishes at Ebincher Church Ala, at Selm and a skirmish before Macon . Mr Flinn was never wounded nor sick enough to be in a hospital, and was never a prisoner . He took part in all of his regiment skirmishes and was always ready for active duty. At Missionary Ridge a shel passes directly back of his head, so close the rush of air knocked him down , and at Stone River again he narrowly escaped death . After the war he lived in Carrol County Ind, on a farm for about 18 months and in 1867 he returned to Boone County he married January 17, Missouri G daughter of William L and Eliza (Mitchell) Martin . William L Martin was a mechanic born in Maryland moved to Cincinnatti and came to Indiann and settled in Scott County . As A pioneer in 1838 Mr & Mrs Martin had nine children Mary F, James E, William H , Missouri G, Adelia O, Arthur E, Elvira U, Granville E And John F . Mr Martin decesnded from an Old American Pioneer Family with English stock. His Son James E Martin was a solider in the Civil War , Company G 11 reg. Indiann Vol. He was promoted to sargent and assigned to the 46 reg. Arkansas Calvary. He became a Docter afterwards. He was an honorable citizen and a member of the Methodist Church. After Marriage Mr Flinn Settled in Thorton engaged in farming and in 1885 brought his present property consisting of 46 acres of land in center township and with his pension of fourteen dollars a month is in comforable circumstances . Mr & Mrs Flinn have three children now living Charles O , C A , and Roy E . Both Mr & Mrs Flinn are members of the Christian Church of which he is secretary and trustee . In political opions he is a staunch republican, Mr Flinn has a clean record as a solider and didnot shrink his duty. He faced death for his country at Stone River and Missionary Ridge and his name honored as a solider will be handed down to his sons and descendants as long as the old flag for which he fought waves in the breeze. His declartion for pension papers state that he was a farmer with fair skin gray eyes 6ft tall . He stated since living service he resided in Boone & Cass Co Indianna and in Branch Co Michigan. He first applied for invalid pension in 1877 and recieved such under cert no 280370 . In November 1921 requested being placed on pension roll of the US under the provisions of the act May 1 1920 Claim 250344 This was filed at Union City Branch Co Michigan . One of the witness on this affidavit was his son Charles O Flinn .
