Notes
a. Note:   1840 Tennessee Census - James Tagart, 7yrs old Samuel B. Taggort (sic), Haywood County 1850 Tennessee Census - No Candlish, Tagart/Taggart/Taggort 1850, 1860 Mississippi Census - no data Listed in the following US Census records: October 4, 1870 Census, Marion County, Texas June 17, 1880 Census, Gregg County, Texas June 1900 Census, Nevada County, Arkansas Memories provided by Gail Robbins Tagart as told by Samuel Tagart Sr. about his grandfather: Re: Whitfield's father, James H. (he went by "Hampton" - that's how Sam's dad referred to him) - He was born 3 Jan 1832, in Tennessee; died 17 Jun 1896, in Jefferson, Marion Co., TX. We don't have his burial info., but his wife, Henrietta, was buried at Oakridge Cemetery, Malvern, Arkansas. They had seven children. "Hampton" was a farmer. His family came to Arkansas about 1900, after selling the Tagart farm in Jefferson, Texas, for $600. They received about $1.00 per acre. Hampton's father was probably born in North Carolina (ref. 1880 Census, Prescott, Gregg County, Texas, listing for James H. Tagart - it's hard to read.)
