My Uncle, Leo Mitchell, recently added his Y-DNA to the Family Tree DNA "Mitchell" project. Our Mitchell men are from a line that hasn't been identified as yet, but seems to be mostly Irish/English/Scottish. But, to find out if Mary Edwards was truly Cherokee, we need to find a direct female-line descendent for the mtDNA test. If Ada Jane's daughter was your mother's mother, you would qualify and I would be happy to pay for all or part of the test, if you are interested. I have found someone's research that shows Mary being the daughter of Adonijah Edwards and Elizabeth Exum - both white. The mtDNA test might clear it up. Hope all is well with you!~ Linda Mitchell Griffith lmgriffith1@msn.com <mailto:lmgriffith1@msn.com> [ GARY J. Ive received some early reports on Barbara Bruncks mtDNA. It looks like our ancestor, Mary Mitchell, was from haplogroup K which does not seem to have been found in Native American populations. However, it looks like the more expensive test would give us more recent information about Marys ancestry, so I will probably order the upgrade. If shes not Native American, then maybe she really is the daughter of Adonijah Edwards and Elizabeth Exum, as one researcher has her. Ive cut and pasted some of the information about the test results below. Of course, theres always the possibility of an unknown adoption or infidelity, so perhaps we could find another direct maternal descendent to double check. My relatives were always so certain that we had a Native ancestor. Best always, Linda For more information about K, follow this link and click on Genetic Markers. https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/atlas.html _______________________ MITCHELL, CRAWFORD I am looking for information on John and Mary MITCHELL who lived in Maury County from ~1820 to at least 1843. During that time they had 11 children: Cynthia, Minta, Jesse, Susan, Nancy, Mary, Sarah, Caldonia, John, Rowena Clementine, and Mary E. Minta and Jesse married Calvin (in 1842) and Martha (in 1846) LATTA, respectively. Rowena Clementine married William CRAWFORD of Rutherford County in about 1865. Mary is said to have been full-blood Cherokee; according to a census record she was born in NC in 1801; John MITCHELL was born ~1793 in GA. Thank you in advance for your help!
