I would like to see if you might have information on: WINFIELD, Robert Marvin - he was born in Arkansas March 7, 1868 and died January 14, 1936. The family was living in the Black Springs/Norman area of Montgomery County and Robert Winfield is buried at Black Springs Cemetery. I would particularly like to obtain an obituary. This family moved near Mena in 1894, homesteaded land in Polk county in 1902 and by 1910 are listed in Caddo Township, Montgomery County. Thank you for any help that you can give me. Jana Petermann Stillwater, OK __________________ 2-1-2008 nhpp@hughes.net RE: Your offer of research help Dear Shirley, We spoke in early December and you graciously offered me help with family history. I would like to see if you might have information on: WINFIELD, Robert Marvin - born March 7, 1868 - Arkansas died January 14, 1936 buried at Black Springs Cemetery (Baptist side) I would particularly like to obtain an obituary. This family moved near Mena in 1894, homesteaded land in Polk county in 1902 and by 1910 are listed in Caddo Township, Montgomery County. The family was living in the Black Springs/Norman area of Montgomery County when Robert "Marvin" Winfield died. I have one other request. Marvin's father-in-law, Jesse Mitchell died in 1913. Based on your knowledge of Montgomery county and surrounding area records I wonder if you could offer suggestions on the likelihood of an obituary or mention of that death being made in newspapers since his daughter, Ada Jane Mitchell Arnold Winfield was a resident of the area? Thank you for any help that you can give me. I hope that your family is all doing well! Jana Petermann Stillwater, OK SAM to me show details Feb 17 (7 days ago) Reply Jana, I don't mean to ignore you, I've just not had time to get into this research. My husband had eye surgery and I'm going next week to be put to sleep and have some dental work done, which I'm not looking forward to. I looked in the printed and filed files and found nothing. I'll look on the microfilm for Polk county when I can. As for the microfilm for Montgomery county, I don't have those years, but will try to borrow it when I get the chance and see if there is anything there. As for the 1913 obit, they didn't put obits in the papers back then, but there are a couple places we might look. One is the funeral records in Mena, Polk county. Many Montgomery county people used the funeral homes there and we have their records. I've located lots of people from there, even my grandmother who died in the same year, 1913. The other is to check laterally, meaning check the obits and information of those around him. Often an obit might say so and so was the wife or child of so and so who passed away and it will give the date. A long shot, but might be worth it. One last way, would be to check the community news for the area and close areas to where they lived. The papers are full of community news columns and they often are filled with the illness reports or death reports of people in the community or nearby communities, or a person who is related and lives in their community and they are sending condolences. For now that's all I have to offer, I'll do the look ups when I have time. sam Shirley Manning, President Norman Historic Preservation Program, Inc. P.O. I hope that your husband is doing well and that you sail through your dental work. Thank you so much for you help and suggestions. I have worked on getting other family obituaries, but am lacking one or two. I will continue to pursue those in hopes of finding clues. If I find anything that can refine the search I will let you know. I will be happy to hear from you as your time allows and at your convenience. Thanks again. Jana SAM to me show details Feb 17, 2008 11:52 PM Reply Jana, I looked at the Mena Weekly Star newspapers tonight for your obit for Robert Marvin Winfield. I didn't find anything. There were no obits in the paper back then, only a few that had some notable interest. I read the local news for the area that it might be in, but again saw nothing. Unless there is something in the Mt. Ida or Norman papers I'm afraid that's it. We do have a Mena Daily Star, but I'm not sure it if was publishing daily and weekly during this time period. I don't have the daily's We might look at the Jan 37 paper for 1936 events and see if anything is listed. I stopped and went back and checked that, nothing there in the events of 36. Most deaths are listed there, if they are in the paper during the year. Sorry it didn't work out. I do hope that your dental work went well and that you & your husband are both doing well. Thanks again! Jana
