Note: Funeral - July 21, 2004 at Marella United Methodist Church. Memorial Service - July 22, 2004 Craig Methodist Retirement Center Chapel, Amarillo, Texas. Obituary given by Linda Millar at James Wesley Taggart's funeral and memorial on July 21-22, 2004 James Wesley Taggart, 82, died July 17, 2004 at Windflower Nursing home in Amarillo, Texas. Jim, as he was fondly known, was born November 20, 1921, in Cimarron County, Oklahoma to Calvin and Finis Taggart. He grew up, lived and farmed there until his retirement in 1997. He then moved to Craig Methodist Retirement Center and resided there until September 2003. He stated those years at Craig were some of his happiest. Regretfully, failing heath issues caused him to be wheelchair bound and placed in the Windflower Nursing home, since mid- September. All who knew and loved him felt this of course came far to early for him. He began his school career at Union Chapel. This school disbanded at the end of three years and then was known as Union Graded during his remaining three years there. He and his brother Bill's transportation on the 3.5 mile journey was one very old horse. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1938, along with seven other classmates. He attended Amarillo Business College from 1939-1941. He put himself through school by working as an elevator operator, dishwasher, and a male secretary. He was offered a job as a Civil Service typist in Amarillo. However, his father's loss of sight and his inability to maintain the family farm prompted Jim to return home and take over the farming duties. Jim was involved in many organizations during his adult life. He became a 32nd degree Mason which qualified him to lecture many places through out the area. He also instructed other young men as they were learning the work. He served on the Excise Board of Cimarron County for nine years. However, his greatest accomplishment was to be available to help the friends and families of the community in which he lived. He loved his close friends there and his greatest joy came in serving them. As he moved to Amarillo, he quickly found many opportunities to serve his new family there. He cheerfully prepared the morning coffee at the coffee shop, called Bingo in the afternoons, and played dominoes with friends at night. He served as president of the residence board as well as president of his Sunday school class. His strong faith in God was a testimony to all. As a young child he made his profession of faith. He was an avid Bible scholar and taught Sunday school for many years at Marella Methodist Church. When he moved to Craig, he continued to be active in a Sunday school class and worship services at St. Paul's Methodist Church. His love for God and his gentle, compassionate spirit have blessed and enriched everyone whose life he touched. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and we are thankful for the many wonderful memories of our times spent together. For family, it is these memories which will sustain us and allows us to pass on his legacy to each generation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Finis Taggart, and older sister, Lois Alexander, a niece Karen Taggart Shaw, a great nephew Grant Alan Alexander. He leaves to mourn his passing a sister, Mildred Cox, Boise City, OK. Two brothers, William Taggart, Stillwater, OK., and Robert Taggart, Baldwin Park, CA., 10 nieces and nephews, 15 great nieces and nephews, 9 great-great nieces and nephews, many cousins and a host of friends In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Craig Methodist Retirement Community, or Windflower Nursing home.
