He died February 10, 1891 in Sidney, Cheyenne Co, NE and was buried in the Village Cemetery, "Boot Hill" Sidney, NE. As a young man, Larman moved from New York to St. Charles, Missouri. On June 15, 1839 Larman bought property in St. Charles from Robert T. Cummins. On July 27, 1839 Larman bought a house and lot in the town of St. Charles from Ezra Hubbard for the price of $600.00. I assume these purchases were made prior to the 1839 marriage of Larman & Louisa J. Long. These properties were sold March 3, 1840 & April 6, 1840 and Louisa's name and signature was on the deeds along with Larman's. They lived in St. Charles until sometime after January of 1848 when their fourth child was born. The family was living in Warren County, Missouri at the time of the 1850 census. Larman's occupation was listed as "joiner" (carpenter). At this time, Lucy Long, age 65 was living with them, along with John T. Long, age 40 and Sarah Long, age 36. They purchased 280 acres in Charette Township, Warren County, Missouri on November 6, 1854. [Sections 6 & 7, township 44 North, Range l West - U.S. Land Patent #23662] This land was purchased from the government for $1.25 an acre. At the time of purchase, a down payment of 12 1/2 cents an acre or $35.00 was made at the U.S. land office in St. Louis, Missouri. Neighbors who went with him were: August Gast, Elija Thouroughman, Joseph G. Waller; the first state representative, Absolam Hays; the first sheriff of Warren County, John Ernst Suhre, and George Wall; an Evangelical preacher. They paid this land off on June 10, 1857. They sold this land June 2, 1857, by quit claim deed to Garrett D. Fitzgerald. They appeared before Justice of the Peace, Johns Northcutt on May 20, 1858 to verify signatures. Between 1857 -1858 the family moved to Moniteau County, Missouri to the town of California. I found an advertisement in the California "News", fall 1858 - L. Taggart, builder. In 1862 the family moved to Kingsville Township, Johnson County, Missouri. (According to Annie's obituary they moved to the farm that was owned by C. E. Howard in 1928.) Their youngest child, Minnie was born in Holden, Missouri. In 1880, Larman was diagnosed with consumption and was advised to move to a drier climate. In this same year Larman and Louisa and their two youngest girls, Alice and Minnie moved to Sidney, Nebraska. Their daughters, Ella & Lena were already living in Sidney, Ella having gotten married there on 4-28-1880. Larman's obituary says that during this journey, he began to walk a little behind the wagon each day until he could walk six or seven miles a day. He would have been 65 at this time. Larman recovered his health and worked as a carpenter in Sidney for eight years. Their four youngest girls all married in Sidney between 1880 and 1886. According to his obituary, Larman "was very retiring in his manners, shrinking from the public eye, but those who knew him intimately said there was not a purer man in his town than Mr. Taggart". ____________ In 1921-3 the old Village Cemetery was in disrepair due in part to free range grazing & the elements. The military, who had many soldiers buried there provided 20 acres of land to the town of Sidney for a new cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery. Notice was given for family members to have "loved ones" moved to this new location. All soldiers graves and unidentified graves (where markers had been destroyed) and unclaimed graves were moved at this time to Ft. McPherson, Maxwell, Nebraska. A check of Greenwood and the Ft. McPherson Cemetery records provided no clues to where Larman's grave is. It most likely was unidentified and moved to Ft. McPherson. _________ *2-28-2001 "I have checked our records and we have no record of Larman Taggart being interred here. You are correct that the cemetery in Sidney was moved here around 1922. I looked in an old record book and it looks like on August 10, 1922 , 200 remains were received at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery from Sidney, NE. A large number of those received were listed as unknowns. Received were unknown men, women and children remains, many were military and some were civilians." Jim Schwartz Director Ft. McPherson National Cemetery Maxwell, NE Phone 1-308-582-4433 _____________________________ A will search of Sidney County Court records was unproductive. In August 2000, records held in the courthouse basement & and index of wills held on deposit were checked by courthouse staff. _____________________________ Mr. Larman Taggart was born in Madison County, New York October 3, 1815. In young manhood he removed from his childhood home to St. Charles, Missouri where he married in 1839 to Miss Louisa Long. This marriage was blessed with nine children, four of whom, Mrs. Ryder, Mrs. Eubank, Mrs. Shuman and Mrs. Miller are known to this community. In 1880 Mr. Taggart came to Sidney. He started in the hope that this climate would relieve him of consumption. Coming by private conveyance he began to walk a little behind the wagon thus growing stronger and stronger till toward the end of the journey he was able to walk six or seven miles a day. In Sidney he worked at his trade for eight years, being a carpenter. He was very retiring in his manners shrinking from the public eye, but those who knew him intimately said there was not a purer man in this town than Mr. Taggart. After a few days of severe illness he died in peace at his home on Front Street, on Tuesday, February 10, 1891, at 4:45 p.m. Mrs. Shuman who now lives in Denver was in attendance on the funeral. His remains were laid in the village cemetery on Thursday afternoon in the presence of numerous friends. Peace to his memory. May God who comforts the heart comfort the sorrowing widow and children in their affliction. _______________ Sidney Telegraph Saturday, February 14, 1891 Sidney, Nebraska

Note:   (Research):I am researching Larman T. TAGGART who was born in Madison County, NY, October 3, 1815. Larman left New York as a young man and was living in St. Charles, Missouri by 1838. There, in 1839 he married Louisa J. Long of Kentucky. They remained in St. Charles until 1848-49. Larman worked as a joiner & the four eldest of their nine children were born here. This family was in Warren County, Missouri from 1850 to June 1857, Moniteau County, Missouri - 1858 to 1862, Johnson County, Missouri - 1862 - 1880. In 1880, Larman, Louisa and their four youngest daughters moved to Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska. Larman died there February 10, 1891. Larman & Louisa's children all of whom were born in Missouri were: Julia - 1840 John W. - 1842 Mary - 1844 Annie Elizabeth - January 8, 1848 Winfield Scott - July 31, 1850 Ella - July, 1854 Ida "Lena" - ca 1856 Alice Sarah - February 16, 1860 Minnie - ca 1864 I have additional information on most all of these people including spouses, marriage dates, children, etc., and would happy to share. Now for my research request. I am trying to determine Larman Taggart's parentage and it seems likely that he may fit into the family of William Taggart of Lebanon, Madison County, New York. William Taggart was Lebanon Overseer of the Poor in 1807 and a Veteran of the War of 1812. He died November 12, 1842, at the age of 77. I have found 5 other Taggart men in Madison County, New York. 1) Samuel & wife Betsey were living in Lebanon & sold property in Hamilton in 1810. 2) James - died in 1829 at age 12. 3) John A. (wife Lucy A. & daughter Harriet A., born 10-20-1838)-on the 1840 Census in Hamilton, died in 1840 at age 24. 4) Leander, ca 1804 & wife Sarah A. on the 1850 Census in Lebanon & sold property in 1851. The 1850 Census shows six children ranging in ages from 15 years to 2 months: James D. - 15, Leander Jr. - 13, Riley - 8, William - 6, Sarah - 2, & John P.- 2 months. 5) William L. ca. 1816, married Lydia Florilla Pool on January 9, 1845, in Poolville. They are listed on the 1850 Census in Eaton, and in the 1855 State census (in Eaton) they have four children. William R. - 8, Mary E - 6, Arthur - 3, and Florilla - 1. William is listed as a cabinet maker & carpenter. I believe that most if not all of these men are related to Larman & would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone with information on any of these people. I particularly would like to learn more about this William L. as oral history indicates that Larman had a brother named William and that carpentry was a family trade. Again, I will be pleased to share all information that I have & help in any way that I can. ______________ L. Taggart vs. L. Hobbs, was continued until June 25th. The Sidney Telegraph May 29, 1886 ______________ The case of L. Taggart vs. L. Hobbs was tried last Monday and Tuesday before County Judge Pease. Reilly and Reilly appeared for the plaintiff and Thos. Kane for the defendant. Judgement was rendered for the plaintiff for the full amount of the claim. It was rather an interesting case, involving the statute of limitation. The Sidney Telegraph August 21, 1886 * trial dates would have been August 16 & 17, 1886 _________
