Notes
a. Note:   From his son David Ross: Not only did he receive a purple heart but a silver star and oak leaf cluster ( a second silver star). These were awarded for UNBELIEVABLE bravery without concern of death in saving his platoon! He had his helmet and and entrenching tool shot away but was not hurt. Sadly he was tragically killed later when World War II was winding down and his platoon was peacefully going through villages. He was riding on a tank and one of our tank destroyers behind him accidentally fired a shell killing him.... All his bravery during battle and this. He had already sent his watch and other items home and the family was excitedly expected him home. Then the horrific shock of being informed.
