Thursday August 20, 1925 The Beginning Of A New Town Felt opened up Friday with Sale. Friday was an enjoyable day as well as profitable for Felt, and surrounding community. Those who purchased lots were: S.B. Kelley, Dalhart; T. E. Leake; Wm. Lunt of Wilkins; D. M. Cloud, Boise City; Mrs. L. A. Combs of Griggs; E. R. Stewart, Dalhart; Lee Larrabee of Liberal, Kansas; Muncy and Carson, Elkhart; T. M. Deal Lumber Co.; W. M. Rixey of Clayton. We hope to see building started soon. The prospects for a thriving little town could not be better on the planes. The Town of Felt is Growing Steadily: W.W. Baxter, manager of the T M Deal Lumber Company of Felt was a visitor to the news office Tuesday. He reports that Felt is growing steadily. Three new residences and a garage have been erected there the past ten days. Mr. Leake will have his general store ready for business there in a few days, and U. J. Warren, of Tyrone, will erect an elevator there at once. The Gresham School house will be moved to this town at once, and the next term of school held there. (1926) BERTRAND: The McDaniel family held a reunion at the home of Uncle Jim Mc Daniel last Sunday. Those present were: Mr. & Mrs. Babb and son of Eldorado, Okla. Mrs. Babb is a sister of Uncle Jim. Mr. & Mrs. Will McDaniel, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Jacobs from Parsons, Kansas, F. M. McDaniel and children, J. M. McDaniel and children, W. A. McDaniel and children, Charles Mc Daniel and children, O. H. McDaniel and children, Glenn Jacobs and children, Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Rader, Miss Louisa Taylor, whose home is in Kansas City, Harold Edwards and T.E. Leake. There being 49 present, a lively day was spent and a most delicious dinner spread. (1926) T. E. Leake, owner of the Bertrand General Store, had his store building moved last week to his new location in Felt, where he will continue in business. (1926) Richard Parsley and cousin Roy Taylor, have put in a nice stock of general merchandise in the T.E. Leake store in Felt and invite our patronage. They will also run a cream station and produce house. (1926) BERTRAND: Our hearts are sad today. We have just returned from the funeral of little Harvey Walker, six year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Walker, who died Saturday morning at Dalhart at 9:30 A.M. He was sick only a few days. Harvey was in his first year at Sunny Slope. Funeral services were held at the Bertrand cemetery, Rev. T.E. Leake conducted the services. Pallbearers were his little school mates, Burley Henson, Julius Gladdish, Roy Cagle and Durwood Patterson. (1927) (1927) BERTRAND: A little boy was born Friday to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Thaxton but died and was buried Saturday afternoon in the Bertrand Cemetery. Funeral services at the grave were conducted by Rev. T.E. Leake. (1933) Felt:Mrs. Viola Crofford Houshin passed away at the Loretta Hospital in Dalhart, Thursday afternoon, December 29, 1932. Funeral services were held at the Bertrand Union Church Friday afternoon by Rev. T. E. Leake. (1945) Our community was saddened to learn of the death of T. E. Leake. He was truly a pioneer of this area, having homesteaded a few miles east of Bertrand in the early 1900's. He later owned and operated a general store at Bertrand and when the town of Felt was being built, he moved his store there, where he served the public for a number of years. He then made his home with his daughter for several years, before going to Boise City. Obituary: T. E. Leake, born of Josiah and Mary Leake, June 22, 1855 at Louisville, Ky., passed away February 25, 1945. At the age of one, he moved with his parents to Missouri, and at the age of 5, they moved to Texas, settling near Dallas, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Martha Clements, in 1878. To this union 2 children were born, Susan A and Emett E. His wife died in 1885 and Susan died in infancy. He was married to Dora Emery (Eva Eudora) in 1889. Flora and LaRue were children by his second wife. Dora died in September 1894. In May 1910, he came to Bertrand, Okla. and married Belle Peekover. She passed away in 1916. He united with the Baptist Church in early childhood and became a minister in early life and retired in 1910 when he moved to Oklahoma. After his last wife passed away, he made his home with his 2 daughters until he moved to Boise City in 1939. He was the eighth of 12 children who preceded him in death. He is leaving 2 daughters, Mrs. Orval McDaniel, of Kerrick, Texas and Mrs. Frank Stubblefield of Las Cruses, New Mexico. Nine grandchildren and 7 great-grandc hildren, besides a host of relatives and many friends.
