a. Note:   He served 4yrs in the Civil War w/24th Iowa Infantry volunteers and marched w/Sherman to the sea. In 1870 Marion and Ellen moved by covered wagon to the new town of Downs, Ks. in Osborne Co. Ks. in 1879 where Marion and his father-in-law William Willford established the Pioneer General Store, the first in town. The Missouri Pacific RR had just reached the town and not long after Marionwent to work as a brakeman and was killed in the yard at Downs on the 22nd ofSept 1882, being thrown between the cars by a defective brake.
