a. Note:   who was extremely helpful. "Joseph Willford came to Philadelphia, PA on board a convict ship in 1766 from England. He was accused of, and convicted of, and was going to hang for stealing a horse. His employers stood up for him at his trial, and said he was of good character and had done nothing wrong before. He probablybought the horse off of the real theif ...as he said he did..but England provedthat the horse was stolen and he did indeed have it, so at the last moment when he was to be hung, his sentence was changed to deportation to America."
