Manchester and his car went off the road -rolled and hit a tree -- he was air lifted to Park View Memorial hospital in Ft Wayne -no other vehicle was involved -- no one knows (even Byron) why he went off the road -whether he blacked out or what --He is so frail and weakened - He had been to the golf course and was on his way home. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union PACKERTON � A North Manchester man is in critical condition after a one-car accident Tuesday afternoon near Packerton. Clayton Harting, 89, of West Seventh Street, North Manchester, suffered severe head injuries in the 1:55 p.m. accident on Packerton Road, 1,500 feet south of CR 800S. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff�s Department, Harting was southbound on Packerton Road when, for an unknown reason, his car crossed the center line and went off the east side of the road. Harting�s car struck a swing set and tree in the yard of Jimmy Allen, South Packerton Road, Claypool, before the vehicle rolled over onto its top. Harting, who was semi-conscious at the scene, was pinned in the wreckage until emergency crews arrived and were able to free him. After being rescued, Harting was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital before being transferred via helicopter ambulance to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Jan 2001 -- "Pop" Harting moved from his Lake Tippecanoe home into the Peabody Home in N Manchester after a rough Dec and some hospitilizations for congestive heart failure and pneumonia the family decided that living alone was not a good idea. It was a difficult adjustment , but "Pop" settled in. Assisting at the scene of the accident were personnel from Claypool, Silver Lake and Chester Township fire departments, South Central and Multi-Township emergency medical services and Silver Lake Police Department. The accident remains under investigation. See photo in scrapbook section 8-9-2001 ---Ft Wayne Journal Gazette CLAYPOOL-- DRIVER, 89, CLINGS TO LIFE AFTER CRASH An 89 year old North Manchester man fought for his life Wed. night after a one-vehicle crash the day before on Packerton Road in Kosciusko County, police said. Clayton Harting was driving south on Packerton Road about 1:55 p.m. Tues. when he crossed the centerline and went off the east side of the roadway, the Kosciusko Co. Sheriff's Dept. said. The vehicle struck as swing set in a front yard, then a tree, causing the vehicle to roll onto its roof, reports said. Initially, Harting was driven to Kosciusko Community Hospital for severe head injuries but was later flown to Parkview Hospital in Ft Wayne. He was in critical condition Wed. night. OBITUARY ---NORTH MANCHESTER Fort Wayne Journal Gazette --8-11-2001 C. Byron Harting, 89, died friday at Parkview Hospital. Born in Mechanicsburg. He retired in 1976 from Harting Furniture company after 43 years of operating the business. His wife, Gwendoly , died in 1980. Surviving are 3 sons, Hal B. of winona Lake and Kent B. and Von B. both of North Manchester; 6 grand-children; and 3 great grand children. Services at 11 am Monday at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester chapel, with calling one hour before services. calling also from 2-6 p.m. Sunday. Burial in Oswego cemetery. Memorials to Shriners Hospital in care of the funeral home.
