Note: John and his family came to Australia to work in a sponsor's garden at Chilwell (Essendon). When they left there, he moved to The Briars at Mt
Martha, owned by Alexander Balcombe, family of Dame Mabel Brookes. She
mentions him in her book. He helped to build the house itself and
started the garden. Worked there for many years, as did his son John
Henry.
John commited suicide by drowning in a neighbour's dam. He had lost a
lot of money in the land crash of the 1890s. Body found by neighbour
Alex McLennan, Auntie Florrie questioned at the inquest, she was 14.
