Note: OBITUARY [Springfield Sun 06/02/1946]: PEDESTRIAN IS KILLED NEAR DAYTON Dayton, June 1 - Harvey Edward Beal, 51, of Dayton, Route 9, was killed Saturday when struck by the car of Earl M Whitt, 23, Fairfield, Sheriff's deputies Otis Crane and Ward Weikert reported. The accident occured on Route 69 about 200 yards north of the Drive-In-Theater. Mr Whitt, en route to work at The Dayton Rubber Co plant, told deputies he did not see Mr Beal until he was within five feet of him. Mr Beal was then in the center of the south-bound lane of traffic, walking north, Mr Whitt told the officers. Mr Beal, after being struck by the automobile, fell on top of the radiator and was carried 65 feet before he fell off, the deputies reported. They said Mr Whitt's car continued another 190 feet before stopping. "I was so excited and didn't know what to do," he told the officers. Mr Beal's death brought the total to 39 for Montgomery County and City of Dayton this year. The deputies took a statement from Mr Whitt. He was not held. Mr Beal was employed by The Master Electric Co, Dayton, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Dayton. Survivors are a son, John Edward of Dayton, Route 9, a brother, Dorsey of Dayton, and three sisters, Mrs Willard Godfrey of near New Carlisle, Mrs I R Lance of New Carlisle, and Mrs George Kerg of Dayton. The body ws removed to the Trostel funeral home, New Carlisle, and Sunday will be removed to Mrs Godfrey's residence for funeral services at 2 pm Tuesday. Rites will be conducted by the Rev Robert L Sherfy, pastor of the New Carlisle Brethren Church. Burial will be in New Carlisle Cemetery.
