Note: Evah recalled taking her dad's Rabbit Tobacco one time, and rolling her own cigarettes. She was in 4th grade and was playing with a bunch of Chitwood kids and relatives, one being Alec Chitwood and other cousins. It made her sick. Pate was in the Air Force and on his way home from work when he was killed in a horrific car accident and tossed into the riverbed. This happened in Bakersfield/Taft, CA. It is also been said that he had been drinking at the time. When she married Maury, he worked for Standard Oil which sent them traveling and living in New York City, the country of Venzuela. She met him when she had got a flat tire, and was out changing it and he drove by and asked if she needed help. When she and Pate got married and moved to Taft in the early 30's, they owned and operated a grocery store until Pate was killed. She met Maury there in Taft. She stayed in a Santarium for a while near Fresno and Sequoia National Park when she had Tuberculosis. She had another daughter, Barbara, but she was born with deformed intestines which led to her death as a baby. Terri has a photograph of her holding Carole Brooks in 1938. She has other photos of Evah too in her older years.
