Notes
a. Note:   Cumberland is a county situated in the north-western corner of England. During the Middle Ages, England & Scotland disputed possession of the county, and border and raids often centered on Carlisle. For many hundreds of years, Cumberland remained somewhat isolated from the rest of England. But, in the late 1700's, the mountain scenery of the county began to attract visitors. Today, the Lake District, about two-thirds of which lies in the county, is one of the most famous tourist regions of Britain.
John JOHNSON was employed as a farmer for 7 years before he set sail for Australia in 1863 and arrived in Melbourne on the ship "Shalimar" in January 1864. Isabella and the first child, Mary Ann arrived in Victoria on the ship "Sam Cearns" on 26th December 1865.
John JOHNSON mined at Blanket Flat, Daylesford for 2 years, then in Ballarat district for about 8 years. Then in 1874 he acquired 360 acres of land at Tongala.
  TONGALA
'Tongala' was the name of the squatting run managed by Edward Curr for his father in the 1840's. The town grew up around the railway sisidng to the south of the property and is set in some of Victoria's richest farmland - largely a result of irrigation. Tongala has a long dairying history and boasts Victoria's biggest milk-processing plant, a subsidiary of the Nestle company, the first product of which was the popular brand of condensed milk.
