Dawn Murphy's note: " Joseph Badham Sr. Born: abt 1780 in England, em1816 to Hull PQ, Notes from Ed Wilson: Hi BarbI don't know the father of Joseph but I do know thathe had a brother John.Joseph Badham - 1790-? was brought over to Canadaby Ruggles Wright, who was the son of Philemon Wright who foundedHull, Quebec - which is opposite Ottawa, the capital of Canada on theOttawa River. Ruggles Wright recruited a group of about 20 young mento come to Canada to work for his father. The following is a letter from the Wright papers which are in the NationalArchives.========================================Holmer near Hereford, 24 Mar. 1816SirI hope you will excuse the liberty I have taken with a gentlemanI have had so little intercourse with, but having an opportunity ofseeing you personally since you was at my house seeing the cows I have avail'd myself of addressing you to the following effect. Thebearer hereof is a Brother of mine and has the strongest admiration toleave this country for America and if any vacant situation yet remainethwould be happy to engage into your service embark with you immediately. He is a young man of 26 years of age of sober steady uniform conduct andis thoroughly aquainted with the management of agricultural concerns inall its branches in which you will find him capable of giving you every information relating thereto, as to caring of stock and raising of corn, the practical part in which he has always been engaged since his infancy. If youshould have no further need of more persons in your employ than you havealready engaged with, I should consider it as the greatest favour you could confer on me if you will allow him to pass over.Undr your protection in company with his two neighbours Mess'rs Prince &Wilson with whom he is perfectly acquainted. I have also furnished him witha sum of money to pay his passage. On his arrival in America if your kindnesswould give him a recommenation I am convinced his conduct will never disgraceit and will ever pay his most respectful gratitude to his patron and benefactor. At no very distant period it is my present intention to leave thiscountry for thatpart of the globe in which you reside when I should be happy to pay my mostrespectful compliments for the trouble I have given you with my brother.I am Sir YourObedient Hum'l Serv'tJohn Badham---------------------------------------------------Addressed to - R. Wright, Esq'rand has -- Mr. BradhamHerrefordthe 24 March 1816============================================From other sources - it seems the Wilson referred towas William Wilson and the Prince was Richard Prince.I have not copied the letter from the Archives but I have a notethat there is a letter there from Charles Wilson, E. Withington (it maybe Witherington), near Hereford - it seems his son, which would bethe William Wilson and the son of Richard Prince went to Hull, Canada. There was also a Joseph Saunders that came out - probably on thesame boat.I don't have the exact info in front of me at the moment - but I recallfrom researching this in the past - that cattle were brought over on thesame ship that the group of young men came over on - they drove thecattle overland and got part way to the port, found they were going tothe wrong port and had to change direction.RegardsEd Wilson ________________________________________________________________________ I think I've found Joseph Badham's family at the LDS site www.familysearch.com <http://www.familysearch.com> They list: Joseph Badham, b.19 Aug 1789 to William Badham and Elizabeth at Holmer, Hereford, England.
