Notes
a. Note:   Suspected that William was raised bya family named Branham after his fathers death and later adopted the name Branham-Smith.
His father moved the family from Shenandoah County, VA, to Russell County in 1800. Isaac died there and his wife, Frankie, took the children, except for William, who was sick, to Kentucky. William was left with a family by the name of Branham who raised him. William thus decided to use the name Branham-Smith for the rest of his life. (Story related by Edna Hines Osborne, a great-great-great-granddaughter of William's.) 1830 Perry Co. census, p. 349, line 26: Listed with 9 people in household. 2 male under 5, 2 age 11-15, 1 age 31-40; 1 female under age 5, 1 age 11-15, 1 age 31-40, 1 age 71-80 (probably Elizabeth's mother, who died 1833 in Perry County--see note below). 1832: November term 1832, Perry County, KY, Order Book A, "Ordered that $40 be levied for ...sport (sic) of Betsey Childers a pauper of this county for the year 1832, and that William B Smith be appointed a committee to receive and appropriate the money for sd Betsey Childers." 1840 Perry Co. census, p. 262, line 21. 1 male under 5, 1 age 11-15, 1 age 16-20, 1 age 41-50; 3 females under age 5, 1 age 6-10, 1 age 11-15, 3 age 16-20, 1 age 41-50. 1850 Letcher Co. census, Dist. 2, No 109: Age 52. (Letcher County formed from Perry and Harlan Counties in 1842.) 1860 Letcher Co. census, No. 452: Age 62. Note: Lodicy Childres, presumably Elizabeth's older sister (b. abt 1794) listed as member of household. 1870 Letcher Co. census, pct 4, Whitesburg, No. 126: Age 72. 1880 Letcher Co. census, p. 40 & p. 599: Age 80 (sic).
