a. Note:   illy moved into their new cabin. The door had not yet been installed, so she had hung a coverlet over the doorway as a temporary door. Late on the day they have moved into the cabin, Elizabeth went to a nearby spring for water. While bending over for water, she heard a loud hissing sound. Looking up, she saw the big cat; dropping her bucket, she ran as fast as she could for the cabin door. Just as she got through the doorway, the panther hit the coverlet, hissing and clawing at it. The cat gave a scream of frustration and left. 1850 Letcher Co. census, Dist 2, No. 109: Age 47. 1860 Letcher Co. census, No. 452: Age given as 55. Note: Lodicy Childres, presumably Elizabeth's older sister (b. abt 1794) listed as member of household. 1870 Letcher Co. census, Pct 4, Whitesburg, No. 126: Age given as 56. 1880 Letcher Co. census, p. 40 & p. 599: Age given as 80.
