Searched 1900 US Census, Letcher Co., Rockhouse District and did not find a son or Head of Household named Ben, Benjamin or Lee.
Claudia said that he had really bad asthma.
Found in the 1920 US Census, Kentucky, Letcher Co., Colson, Enumeration District #60. Lists Ben L. Hall age 41, He was born in KY, father born in TN and mother born in KY. Wife Letha age 39, she was born in KY, father in KY and Mother in TN, Lists children Leonard age 14, Alzenia age 13, Curtis age 11 and Burnette age 4. All children born in KY except Alzenia who was born in VA.
Proffit family listed near them. A child was named Astor Proffit. When I asked James if this is where he got his middle name he was not sure but thought that his mother was related to him.
Listed in Rootsweb by Donna Carmichael, (see sources) she lists wife as Eliza Collins. This confusion may be because Eliza and Letha were twins. Census lists wife as Letha.
Note: Dad says the Hall family was from Knott Co. or up near rockhouse. (Same with wife Collins fam
