a. Note:   h his wife Virginia C., age 24 and their child Franklin Monroe who was 6 months old having been born in December. Both parents show place of birth as VA. They are living next door to a John A Ward, wife Nancy and son Bob. These are most likely relatives of Virginia.
  David appears in the 1900 US census in Summers County, Green Sulpher Springs Disrtict Enumeration District #128. It list David, born Oct 1854, age 45, His occupation is listed as farmer. His wife Virginia C. is listed with a birthdate of April 1886, age 44. Children listed are Franklin M., born Dec 1879, age 20; Minnie, born Aug 1881, age 18; Rosa, born Aug 1884, age 15, Alice, born Sept 1886, age 13; Alfred, born July 1888, age 11; Akins, bonr April 1891, age 9; Harvey, born Dec 1892, age 7, Lonnie, born Aug 1894, age 5; Effie, born April 1897, age 3; Emma, born July 1898, age 1 and 11 months. In this census most of the of age children are shown "at school."
  At the time of the census they are listed after the George and Marshall Ward families, reletives of wife Virginia and just before David's younger brother Joe Bowles and his wife and child.
  An unknown web site states that David was a Road Commissioner and a School Teacher, I have yet to find verification of this.
  Nellie Bowles (Reed-Woods) grand-daughter of David recalls a story of when "Grandpa" Bowles was a young man he was given land. He cleared it and built a home. Nellie stated that David was a lazy man and one day he was sleeping in a field. He woke with a bear covering him with leaves. He had his gun on him and knew what the bear was doing. She was hiding him and was going to bring her cubs back to feed on him. He waited until she returned and shot her.
