Notes
a. Note:   PHOEBE BROWNING BORING Revolutionary War Helpmate During the American Revolution a remarkable girl did what many would not. As far as any one knows she was never rewarded in any way by the United States Government. Letters were written to the Commisioner of Pensions in Washington, D.C. from as far back as 1931but they did not receive sucessful results. What a shame this is I feel. We must strive on and keep writing. Perhaps one fine day MISS PHOEBE BROWNING will be recognized by our Government for the wonderful HEROINE that all her family believe her to be. The following is an excerpt from a letter written to our US Government by a Mr. Isaac Boring Lester on October 12, 1931. "A number of British Officers who were stopping for a night at the BROWNING home were planning a forced march for the next day for the capture of a camp of Americans, sixty miles away and Phoebe, who was occupying an adjoining room, overheard the scheme and when these officers retired, she quietly went to the stable and saddled one of her father's horses and rode the sixty miles in the darkness through the forest, fording streams, climbing mountains, and without roads reached head quarters in time for preparations to be made for the reception of the British who instead of capturing were captured.
