Orville Kimpton Butterfield was probably named in honor of Rev. Orville Kimpton (1802-1849), a Methodist preacher in the Franklin and Bennington Co. area of VT. Although the Goodrich Family Bible says Orville was born in Putnam in Washington County, NY, his daughter Clara Goodrich reported in the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses that her father had been born in Vermont.
Orville and Nancy Butterfield lived in Portland Township in Chautauqua County, NY, at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census. In 1853, the Butterfields moved to Warren County, PA. Orville and Nancy appear in the 1860 U.S. census for Spring Creek in Warren County, PA, with three children: twins Martin and Martha (aged 13) and Clara (as "Clarence E.", aged 2). In 1870, 23-year-old Martin and 12-year-old Clara (as "C.E.") still lived with Orville and Nancy; their daughter Martha had married John Bell by 1870 and was living in an adjacent household. Ten years later, in 1880, John and Martha, were still living with Orville and Nancy Butterfield. There were no children in the Butterfield household in 1880. Neither Martin nor Clara appear in their parents' 1880 household.
A Warren County, PA history includes a short biography of Orville K. Butterfield and his family, but several of the facts reported in that biography are incorrect. It mentions only the Butterfields' daughter Martha but does not mention their other two children, Martin and Clara. It says that Orville K. Butterfield died 7 Nov 1872 at age 49, but he appears in the 1880 U.S. Census at age 56, and did not die until 1892. Nancy J. Bemis, Orville's wife, was said to have been born 10 Aug 1829 "near Fredonia, NY."
Orville K. Butterfield died 7 Nov 1892 in Spring Creek, PA, apparently from the effects of a stroke he had suffered nine months earlier. The pastor who conducted his funeral service wrote a short obituary for Orville that praised his Christian life. An announcement of his death in the Warren Mail of Warren PA on 16 Nov 16, 1892, said he died of pleurisy, however, and said he was about 64 years old.
