William's name first appears as a head of household in the 1810 U.S. Census for Putnam in Washington County, NY, four years after he and Lucy Johnson were married. Also living in Putnam Township at the time were William's father, John Butterfield, his brothers Edward and Nathan and his widowed sister, Octavia (Mrs. Ephraim) Case. William and Lucy had four children in 1810, all under ten years old: one boy and three girls. (A young male, aged 16-26, too old to have been a son, also lived in William's household.)
William and Lucy still lived in Putnam when the 1820 U.S. census was taken. Their household consisted of 2 boys under 10 years (Francis, William R.); 2 males aged 26-45 (William and another unknown male); 3 females under 10 years (Martha, Luretta, Jane), 2 females 10-16 (Sophia, Melintha); and one female 26-45 (Lucy).
William and Lucy are presumed to have been devout converts to the Methodist faith, as they named their sons after Methodist preachers and missionaries. Their first son, Samuel (b1811), was named in honor of Samuel Draper (d1824), a Methodist circuit preacher and first pastor of the Methodist church in Hudson Falls (Washington County), NY. Their second son, Francis (b1817), was named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), first Superintendent of the American Methodist Church, whose tireless missionary work in upper New York from 1777 until his death is credited with establishing the Methodist church in America. Their third son, William (b1819), was named after William Riley, a Methodist preacher who published a hymnal much in use at the time. Their son Orville (b1823) was named after Rev. Orville Kimpton (1802-1849) who was a Methodist preacher in the Franklin and Bennington County area of Vermont.
William died on 18 October, 1827 at the age of 42. William left no will, but his widow, Lucy M. Butterfield, petitioned the Washington County court for title to his estate. No children were mentioned or named in the official probate record. An inventory of William's goods, chattels and credits submitted to the court lists personal property consisting of livestock and grain, tools and household goods worth $263. William appeared not to have owned any land. The bulk of his estate consisted of three debts owed him: "Ezra Holcom" (his brother-in-law, husband of his sister Mathilda) owed him $398., "L.B. Leon" (Ludovicus Lyon, his son-in-law, husband of his 18-year-old daughter Martha) owed him $11. and "Isaac M. Kenyon" (who appears to have been a neighbor) owed him $313.
In 1830, Lucy still lived in Putnam and still had eight or nine children at home. Martha, one of the older daughters, had married Ludovicus Lyon by 1830 and lived in an adjacent household.
William's name appears in the Durfee Family Notebook in various ways, as simply "William Butterfield," as "J. William Butterfield," and as "Wm. Asa John Butterfield." A birth record listed by the International Genealogical Index (taken from New Hampshire vital statistics records) gives him the name, "Billy Butterfield." His probate records refer to him as "William Butterfield."
