Notes
a. Note:   Series M653 Roll 624 Page 701 Email from Roy Cleghorn Feb 2008 Roy Cleghorn Mary (Bay) Cleghorn [mother] Purnia "Pina" Lois (Nelson) Bay [maternal grandmother] Allie Mae (Fortner) Nelson [maternal great grandmother] James J. Fortner [maternal great great grandfather] James J. Fortner could neither read or write. He had a light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. His name was spelled phonetically by others. It has been listed as Fortner AND Faulkner. He volunteered in the Civil War for the Union. He served under Captain Bennight (Also listed elsewhere as Bennett.) He was shot during the "Skirmish at Bennett's Mill", now Springer,s Mill on Sept. 1, 1861 He was probably aiming his musket, right-handed, by the way the wound was described. Ball entered the left side and exited 4 inches to the right of the spine. He was left laying in the field until the skirmish was over. A rag was pulled through the wound and he was taken to Capt. Bennight's house to stabilize.Eight to ten days later, when he didn't die, he was taken to the hospital in Salem, Mo. He became near blind after being shot. I am told that your kidneys affect your eye sight. His left kidney was probably destroyed by the musket ball. According to his claims for invalid pension, he was married to Martha O'Neil from 1850 until her death in 1863. Their only child was Lewis. (Your Louis Fortner) In 1865 he married Caroline Asher and had two girls Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Fortner) Asher and Nancy Matilda (Fortner) Bailey. Caroline died probably in 1877 (Three documents say 1877, the other 1878) In 1878 he married Sarah (Warren?) Fortner who passed away in 1885. They had one daughter Allie May (Fortner) Nelson. My great grandmother. In September of 1889 he married (Nancy?) Evaline (Warren) Fortner. They had three children Francis Marion, Jennette and Edith V. Fortner. Evaline passed away March 1901. He died May 9, 1902. I have not found where he is buried. Francis, Jennette and Edith went to live with their sister Elizabeth and her husband Yance Asher Note that Elizabeth's mother's maiden name was Asher and she married an Asher.
