Text:   John Anton Lowe was the second child and first son of Caleb and Lydia(Brown) Lowe. He was born March 10, 1850 in Moravian Falls. Whilegrowing up he received a common school education and learned farmingfrom his father. At the age of 20 he married Marinda (Minda) Dowell,also of wilkes Co. together their personal property amounted to only4100. She was the daughter of Joshua and Dicey (Watkins) Dowell.Minda was born on June 29, 1852 and was bereft of a formal education,although she could read some. the year after they were married on February 12, 1871, Minda gavebirth to her first child, Christopher Columbus. Thereafter, Calvinwas born in 1873, Crotina in 1875, William G. in 1877 and Lucisous in1879. All of the children were born in Moravian Falls and attendedschool there. During these family building years, the Lowes wereactive members of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Organized in 1845,the "first Church building was built of hwed logs, heated by means ofchimney built of rough rock and banked with red clay, with hugefireplace. The seats were made from split logs into pegs which werefastened for legs." Beginning in 1884, John had reached the point where he was able tofinancially purchase additional tracts of farm land. In that year hebought 200 acres along the middle prong of Moravian Creek, for $600,from W.A. Broyhill Sr., and 25 acres more from the state for 12 1/2cents per acre. Minda's parents greanted them 57 acres in the samearea on May 29, 1886. After his children had grown and his land wealth had become greater,John assumed a more important role in the community. Only July 100,1889, he was appointed one of three school board committeeman fromMoravian Falls. But is was also around this time that he beganexperiencing health problems. In 1902 one of his kidneys started tocause him pain, and he continued to have trouble with it until he diedon August 7, 1915 at the age of 65. Minda outlived her husband by 14 years. Her death on September 19,1929 at age 77 was explained as a failed heart. She missed the GreatDepression by one month. She was buried beside John in Moravian FallsCemetary.
