Text: Caleb Anderson Lowe was the son of Joshua and Lucy Lowe, born on June21, 1820 in Wilkes County. Like his father, he took up the farmintrade. He first married Lydia Brown, a seamstress from Yancy County,N.C., who was born in 1830. On December 8, 1842, Caleb bought 60acres along Moravian Creek from the state for only $3. He and Lydiahad at least seven children, all born in the Moravian Falls area:Fenia Elizabeth (b. in 1848), John Anton (1850), Vilot L. (1853),Thomas M. (1855), Mary Ann (1858), Lydia Margaret (1861), and Barbara(1864). Just before the birth of Thomas, Caleb purchased anadditional 29 acres at 5 cents an acre on June 5, 1854. Then sometimebetween 1865 and 1870, Lydia died. However, Caleb remarried soon after to Mary M., who was born May 4,1843. together, they produced at least five more offspring: Frances(b. in 1872), Vina (1874), Almedia (1876), Peden V. (1878), and Hettie( Dec. 1879). Mary died on JAugust 26, 1884 and Caleb outlived her by18 years, before he finally expired on april 29, 1902. Active membersof the Walnut Grove Baptist Church, both Caleb and Mary are buriedthere in the churchyard. In 1860, Caleb declared that he had real estate valued at $150 andpersonal property worth $200. These amounts became $150 and $150respectively in 1870. Caleb and both of his wives could read andwrite.
