Text:   #786 Joshua and Isiah Lowe, who founded strong Lowe lines in wilkes County, were probably the sons of Caleb Lower, but documentation has remainedelusive. The older of the two brothers, Joshua, was born around 1774,married first Mary Teague 1 October 1805 and then Lucinda Hubbard 9June 1818. Isiah the younger brother was born 17 September 1778 andmarried nancy Jane Pearson 29 June 1834. Joshua and Mary Teague Lower had two daughters: 1. Rosanna H., bornca 1807, married John McLeod Frazier, 2. Elizabeth, who married JohnMcKay (McCoy). By his second wife Lucinda Hubbard, daughter of IshamHubbard, Joshua had eleven other children: 1-Caleb Anderson, born1822, married Lydia Brown first then May Joines, died 29 April 1902,2-Joshua Jr., born 1822, left the country and was never heard from,3-Jesse, also left the county and disappeared, 4-Rebecca, born 1824,5- Mary born 1825, married Lewis H. Smith, 6-Eliza Rinda, born 1827,married William Clanton, 7-Jane C., born 25 June 1830, married EdmundC. Edsel, died 22 December 1916, 8-James Martin, born 26 May 1832,married Clarinda Laws 19 November 1914, 9-Serena, born 1834, married aPhillips, 10-Betsy, married David Smith, 11-Annie. the daughter of Jane Lowe Edsel and son of Mary Lowe Smith married asfirst cousins and were my great grandparents: Mary Alice Edsel andLewis Francis Marion smith. Marrying first cousins is unusual, butMary Alice's background has a particular interesting store. Jane C.Lowe had married Edmund C. Edsel in 1830 and they had one child,Richard. then according to the local stories, Edmund went out to feedthe stock and disappeared. Whether he left the country or was killedis not know. After his disappearance Jane had three other childre, one of whom was my great grandmother Mary Alice. According to localinterviews, her father was Fred Welborn. Joshua Lowe's brother Isaiah Lower, married Nancy Jane Pearson andthey had eight children: 1-W. Tilford, born 18 April 1836, marriedSophona Tritt, died 11 May 1905, 2-Robert Bryant, married SusanDavidson 16 February 1869 and then Mary Woodrine, 3-Benjamin, marriedNancy Matney 25 July 1873, 4-John, 5-Elizabeth, merried Benny Davis,6-Caroline, 7-Mary, married Bartley Davis, 8-Rachel, married JimmyParsons. From these two brothers come may of the Lowes of Wilkes County. #787 the Lowe family lived in Surry county for many years before becomingpart of the new Wilkes county formed in 1777. the earliest Lowementioned in the old county tax lists is william Lowe, who had onepoll taxable while residing in Rowan county in 1771. the followingyear mentions William, Isaac, Calep, Thomas, and John Lowe. surrycounty was formed in 1771 and from Rowan and a William Loo is found onthe 1771 and 1772 tax lists. In 1775, Calob Loe, Isaac Low, AquilaLow and Thomas Loe are all listed. In the Will Abstracts of 1774, oneJohn Lowe is listed. After Wilkes county was organized, the Lowes settled into the MoravianFalls area, where to some extent they have continued to live eversince. The Land Entries indicate that william, Caleb, Isaac andThomas Lowe each owned several hundred acres of land all aroundMoravian Creek in 1778. By the end of the century, the state of NorthCarolina continued to grant litterally thousands of acres to variousmembers of the Lowe family, in the Moravian Creek area. The namesCaleb, william, Isaac and Thomas Lowe continue to recur on the countytax lists from 1782 to 1805. The 1790 Census lists William, R?????,Caleb, Isaac, Mary, Thomas and Sam Lowe as residents of the MorganDistrict. In 1800 we find John, Isaac, William, Samuel, Ezekiel,Caleb and Thomas. while there is some indication that the Caleb Lowe listed is one of mydirect ancestors, I can only identify the subsequent generations headof household as a positive relation. Joshua Low, my great-great-greatgrandfather was born sometime between 1770 and 1775. On October 1,1805 he married Polly Teague in wilkes county and after her death,Lucinda (Lucy) Hubbard in 1818. Joshua is first found in the 1810 Census as between 35 and 40 years ofage, with two girls under 10 and a wife between 16 and 26 (Polly). In1820 he had two boys under 10, one girl under 10, two girls between 10and 16, and wife between 16 and 26 (Lucy). He was a farmer. by 1830,Joshua had six family members employed in agriculture but only one whocould read or write. And in 1840 there were a total of 11 householdmembers. It is likely that Joshua died sometime between 1840 and thenext census of 1850. (Although a Lucinda Lowe was sold 100 acres at 5cents per acre along the last prong of Moravian Creek from the stateof North Carolina on May 17, 1854).
