Note: William Byrd was a juror in a murder case on the 10th of April, 1855. Doctor Fields was charged with the murder of Francis M. Stephens. Elender, 60 yrs old, wife, keeps house, born in NC of NC parents. The following children are listed: Lucy, 28 yr old daughter, laborer; Mathy, 26 yr old son, laborer; Henry, 21 yr old son; Rasberry, 18 yr old son. Also listed in household: Elvia, 16 yr old grand-daughter; Mary, 13 yr old niece; Lucy, 2 yr old grand-daughter. All born in NC of NC parents. Neighbors are Vause. Columbus County Deeds- Feb. Term 1855: David Ray to William Byrd, 12 Feb 1855; $320, 146 1/2 A. in Col. Co. beg on Es of the Spring Branch adj line of River Jordan and Cahoon Branch. Wit: Elijah Creech and B. S. Jones. (M-78/79). Court Minutes, Columbus County Superior Court of Law & Equity: Aug Term 1834: State vs Joseph Ray & William Bird. The def Ray submits & is fined 5 sh. & cost & remain in custody of sheriff till paid. The def Bird pleads not guilty. Jury finds the def. Bird not guilty. Spring term 1847: State vs William Penny & William Bird- (Affray)- Defts charged and plead not guilty. Jury finds deft. Penny guilty and finds Bird not guilty. Penny is fined 10 pennys and costs and ord. into custody of the sheriff until fine and costs paid.(Affray is a public fight or noisy brawl)
