My mother was Edith Ray from the same area and I have been doing research on the Ray's of Columbus cty for 20-25 years. All the Rays in this area are related to either David James Ray( Baptist preacher born 1817) or mitgrated from Horry cty SC in the mid 1800's. David James Ray had 13 children with 12 living to adulthood. I have a good record of all the children and most of their relatives if you are interested. David James Ray is buried in a corn field next to one of the family homesteads on Honey hill rd near Whiteville. This group of Rays have stayed in the Welches Creek area for over 225 yrs. I have some pictures of several of the Ray families from the early 1900 that I can share along with pictures of their headstones. David James Ray's father was John M. Ray and his mother was Anne Lambert. I know of only one other son of John Ray and it is Joseph Ray( 1818) and one sister ( Leah Ray) . I am now left with 5-6 Rays that I can not fit into this line. I think James Ray is related to John Ray but I do not have the proof yet. I do know that he made several trips to Monroe cty Al. The others are Jemima Ray, another Joseph Ray, Archibald Ray, Goldsbury Ray, Nathan Ray,and Cornelius Ray. Be careful with the Joseph Ray name since there are four ( before 1800, 1818, 1874, and 1895). You will find several marriages between the Vause line and the Ray line and will find their families living side by side in the census records. You will find quite a list of land transfers between James Ray( before 1800) and others in the Ray family. He also had several land grants from the State of NC. If I can be of help, please e-mail or call and I will be happy to help where I can. The entry is 18 March 1797 and should not be the same as Mary above. I also have 12 other deed records with James Ray buying, selling, and receiving state grants. Most of the transactions are with Rays related to David James Ray or his father John Ray. I pretty sure that James belongs in this family but I just don't have solid data yet. Sarah Ellen Ray born Nov 30 1876 married Jun 9 1895 and died May 24 1938 was my grandfather's sister. She is buried at Flynn Cemetery on Highway 74 near Whiteville. Are you near to this area? I should have pictures of headstone. I think I have a picture of Sarah but I waited til everyone that could identify her has passed away. My mother Edith Ray would have known. Joyce Batten who lives at Bolton is Sarah's granddaughter and might have pictures. I'll give her a call and see how she is doing this week. My best leads for James Ray are from Ed Rider who states that he has a researcher in Alabama with deeds that show a James Ray born in Columbus county NC. I hope to find his gravesite there. Ed believes that James and John Ray are brothers. If true that still leaves a Joseph born before 1800 who is related also. Deed Book E page 108 Columbus county 12 November 1825 James Ray of Alabama, Monroe county sells to Joseph(1818) and David James Ray for $30 a tract of 100 acres east of Boggy Branch( corner of Nathan Ray). Nathan is a justice of the peace and also related to the this same line. I have references of land purchases for James in NC up to 1817 and then again in 1825 from Alabama. In the 1830 Alabama census there is a listing for Head of Household - James Ray wm - 20 to 30 - 1 wm - 60 to 70 - 1 The Pike Co., Alabama Land Tract Records list : James Ray - Jan. 20, 1829 - 80 acres - T. 8N, R.23E, Sec. 27 " " - Nov.20, 1836 - 40 acres - T.7N, R.23E, Sec. 6 This should be James Ray (1763 NC) and his son Goldsbury(?spelling) age 67 and 27 respectively. There are 9-10 other references for Goldsbury with various spellings from 1830-1850 in Pike county, Al . I still have no information on death or relatives and no cemetery listing. I plan to travel to Summerville Ga next year and will try to arrange a side trip to Pike county for a couple of days. Do we have any more information on Mary 1796, Goldsbury 1803, and Rebecca (before 1797)? I've got some more information on James Ray (1763) and his son Goldsberry Ray who move to Alabama. After James's death in Alabama his son Goldsbury moved on to Grimes Texas in Jan of 1868 . In the 1870 census from Grimes Texas, Goolsbury Ray( age 65) is living with his son Curtis Ray and wife Cynthia ( 2nd wife). There is a Columbus County Deed for Feb term of 1826 from James Ray to Alexander Bird, oath of E. Bryan. posted by james lee ray on 2/06: Jamina Ray's Husband killed in 1779 near Camden was David Ray sr who was attached to Morgans Rifles, he was serving with his son, David Ray jr, both were origionally with the Amherst co va militia when it was called into regular service in 1776, they were on loan to Morgan from the 11th continels, when David sr was killed in the line of duty, and they spent the winter at vally forge with george washington earlier in the war. hope this helps. posted by james hodges: I have the following reference for Jemima Ray located in State Records of NC by Clark vol X1X page 579.
