Note: William Batten lost a leg in the war between the states. Confederate Army, Col. Light Infantry NC Volunteers, Capt John R. Kelly, 51st Regiment on Mar. 17, 1862 at the age of 34 years was wounded and lost a leg. He returned to Hallsboro on the train and developed gangrene and died on a wagon in front of his house. Different ending: Note: Confederate Soldier - Private in Company H, 51st Regiment, NC Infantry. Served under Captain McDugald. Mustered in on April 3, 1862. Wounded in Civil War. Lost a leg. He came back to Hallsboro, NC from the war. A few years later he developed gangrene in his leg (war wound) and died.
