Notes
a. Note:   The first record of the Batten family in Columbus Conty that we have found is a deed made by Joshua Batten in 1812, giving his son, Barnabus, 100 acres of land., whereon he was then living, and reserving a lifetime right. According to census records, Joshua had previously lived in Johnston Co., NC, Mecklenburg County and Richmond County before coming to Columbus County. We think that he came to North Carolina from Virginia for land grants when new areas were opening up for settlement. Joshua served in the New Bern, NC Militia during the Revolutionary War. We do not know if he continued to live in Columbus County or returned to Johnston County. Barnabus Batten did continue to live in Columbus County and received a number of land grants and also purchased a number of tracts of land.
Barnabus Batten had four sons who served in the Confederate Army; Daniel, David, James and William. [William died of a war related leg wound (gangrene) a few years after the end of the Civil War.] Today there are many descendants of Barnabus Batten living in Columbus County and some scattered all over the United States......Written by Dorothy "Dot" M.
