Mary Baskerville by Barbara Batton Pierce of 801 My people are the PA BattXn lines. When I lived in VA Beach I went through the library records in order to sort out mine from the VA lines. I have that John (wife Martha) was son of Daniel, son of Daniel. But his will (John) dated Feb. 13, 1762 doesn't mention a Nathan and I don't find a Nathan in any of the material I found. Lots of Jonathans though. The will mentions wife Martha, son Joshua, son John, daughter Sarah and daughter Frances Jordan and her daughter Mary. Witnesses were Daniel Batton, John Stround (?) and William Batton. Herring is familiar though. I find mention of a Money Batton who was ordered by chancery Court to pay Herring in 1796. He married Nancy Fetherstone in TN. Posted by: Barbara Batton Pierce Date: September 17, 2001 at 15:54:35 In Reply to: Re: John Batten who m. Mary Baskerville by Mouraine of 801 Nathan is a proven son of Martha. He and a brother went to Northampton Co., NC and then went to Johnston Co., NC where they remained. I suspect Nathan had already been given his share of the estate, perhaps when he married, which would explain why he was not mentioned in his father's Will. Nathan was in I.O.W. Co., VA militia when he was age 19, so he is definitely of the I.O.W. Co., VA Battens. I have been trying to sort out the various Daniel Battens. A Mary Best left a bequest to her grandson, Daniel Batten, in her 1724 Will in I.O.W. Co., VA, but I don't know who this Daniel's mother and father were as yet. I feel sure that Martha was a Herring because there are deeds where Daniel Herring transferred land to Nathan and a brother. When they removed to Northampton Co, NC, they transferred the land back to Daniel Herring. It appears that Daniel Herring was their grandfather. My husband is a decendant of the I.O.W. Herrings and the book "Herring Highlights II" by James Maurice Grimwood is a very good source for Herring info. Dr. James W. Batten did a lot of work on this family but he has some errors in his books. I have not heard from him in several years so I don't know if his revised book has been published yet. Thanks again, Barbara When in VA I did some research on local Batten lines. Your John likely son of Daniel per D's will written March 9, 1715/16. John's will dated Feb. 13, 1762 gives his plantation to wife Martha and then to son John. To Frances Jordan one spinning wheel and cards and all the cotton she made. To wife 1/3 of my estate. Money to be divided between son Joshua and daughters Sarah and Frances Jordan and her daughter Mary. Witnesses were his brothers Daniel and William Batten John Batten (b. Abt. 1708, d. Aft. 13 February 1762) John Batten (son of Daniel Batten, Jr. and Sarah Best)23, 23 was born Abt. 1708 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, and died Aft. 13 February 1762 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He married Martha Harris. Notes for John Batten: In his Will, he mentions wife and children listed, plus: Moses Jordan, Frances Jordan, and her daughter Mary. Witnessed by Daniel B. Batten & William Batten. On 2 May 1750, John Batten sold to Thomas Bracey and wife, Hester, 100 acres (being part of a patent to Thomas Harris on 27 April 1686, and inherited by John Batten. [IOW DB 9, pg. 279].
