Note: Ever Batten mustered into the Civil War on 8/25/1863 and deserted on 9/19/1864 (deseration rates were almost 50% in southeastern NC).... A petition for divorce for Ever W. Batten and Sarah F. Batten was heard on 21 September 1868 in Columbus County Superior Court before Judge Daniel I. Russell and was granted the same day. He married Nancy V. Penny on October 18, 1868.... Ever died during a hog killing when he fell into a vat of scalding water.
